Since ever, Saint - Germain des Prés has been a place of a
particular charm that has always inspired artists.
Everything started in 542, when the army, leaded by Childebert, son
of the French King Clovis, besieged the Visigoths in Saragosse. The Saint
Germain des Prés starts to develop near the abbey that Childebert
build up, counseled by bishop Germain, in order to shelter treasures of
the surrendered Vandals, such as Saint Vincents’s tunic. This church and
its monastery becomes rapidly the richest one in France and after the death
of bishop Germain, its name is changed into Saint Germain
The suburb continues to develop and becomes in the 17th century a
center of literature and theater life. Artists meet in the cafés,
already flourishing, such as Procope that opens in 1689 at the moment
of the Saint Germain trade. Curiously and contrary to all the customs,
it becomes the place where artists and clerics cohabit peacefully.
The Revolution in 1789 sounds the death knell for the powerful Benedictine abbey, successively destroyed by an explosion and by a fire. Still, the Saint Germain des Prés area continues its intellectual and artistic blossom, especially in the 19th century. Le Marais, literally "the swamp", was originally exactly that. It
wasn't until the 13th century that convents came to the area and it began
to develop life and culture. The neighborhood became part of Paris when
Charles V reinforced and extended the city wall constructed under Philippe
Auguste. Charles V then moved to the Hotel St-Paul in the Marais, but his
successors preferred the Hotel des Tournelles. It was here that Henri II
died, following a wound from a tournament. Catherine de Medicis later had
the mansion torn down.
The Place Royale (now the place des Vosges), built by Henry IV, was
finished in 1612 and the Marais became a very stylish neighborhood, home
of many grand French mansions and "salons", a sort of intellectual and
philosophical conversation group. But after the Henry IV's assassination
(by Ravaillac) and Louis XIII's accession, the high society left the area
and it was taken up by artisans and small industries.
Today, a trip around the Marais shows the numerous restorations it
has seen. The neighborhood contains some of the oldest buildings in Paris,
and their architectural treasures make the Marais a charming and unforgettable
place to visit.
In 1559, Henri II was brought to the Hotel des Tournelles, where he
died from a wound incurred in a tourney. His death was why Catherine de
Medicis had the building destroyed. Henri IV decided in 1605 to build
a square, originally to put up silk manufacturers. Finished in 1612, the
square had 9 pavilions on each side; the first to be constructed were the
pavilions of the King and Queen. It quickly became a very fashionable place
to be and nobles built their sumptuous homes here in the Marais.
Originally called the Place Royale, the Place des Vosges took its
modern name around 1800 to honor the first provincial department to pay
its taxes. One interesting place to visit here is 6 Place des Vosges,
Victor Hugo's home for almost 16 years The City Hall is a Renaissance-style
building built on the plans of the old City Hall, which burnt down following
the events of the Commune in 1871; the new building was opened in 1882.
The growing importance o the bourgeoisie gave way to a new form of city administration,
headed by the provost. The provost became a royal functionary under St. Louis,
while the bourgeois were represented by "échevins". The power of th
river trading merchants explains why their seal became the seal of the city.
The city council was located on the Place de la Grève in the House
of Pillars, a building bought by Etienne Marcel, provost of Paris. In the
16th century, François I commissioned the architect Dominique de Cortone
to design a new municipal building. The City Hall housed many important
political events; notably, Louis the 16th received the new tricolored cockade
on July 17th, 1798. On September 4th, 1870, the dawn of the Third Republic
was proclaimed at the City Hall, just before the building was burned. The
intricate interior decorations celebrate everything from Agriculture to
receptions held in the old City Hall, from a celebration of the nobility
of various professions to memorials of great times in Paris' history. The
Soubise mansion was bought by the princess of Soubise and reconstructed by
Delamair. It is built over an old gothic mansion once owned by the Duke of
Guise - the only trace of the old building is the one doorway where the Duke
